The silent horror era was when horror was first filmed, obviously there was no sounds and it was unrealistic, these could possibly be seen as comical but it was an important era for horror. they used heavy use of Noir and Chiaroscuro, this is where Gothic horror was first put onto screen, and birthed some classics like the Phantom Of The Opera and Nosferatu. The primal era, animals werewolves and cat people. Oddly this era was heavily focused on animals and were wolves, the connection between these strange things ,horror and animals is because of the second world war, Hitler was often referenced as a wolf and thus it became a fad. 1930-1940.

Mutant creatures and alien invasions. with films such as Body Snatchers and The Thing there was a heavy focus on the sci fi and mutant creatures probably due to the fear of the technological advances of the era still very conventional and gothic horror was still heavily featured. .1950s.

Ghosts, zombies, satanism and your family. In america there was a huge fear that if you war black listen to punk/rock music you must be worshiping the devil, nonsense obviously but people believed it and thus what people fear becomes horror.with films such as eyes without a face, black sunday and mark of the devil.1960-1970

Hammer Horror, A BRITISH SUCCESS. Hollywood decided horror was exhausted and since the war had ended no one wanted to hear and see depressing scary things,Mr Hammer decided that he didn't like this and decided to bring classic horror to a modern world thus hammer industry was born and made hundreds of great horrors featuring the classic stories of Frankenstein,Dracula and a new one the Dunwich horror.

VIDEO NASTIES and SLASHERS two new things for a new world the 80s re made horror slasher films were released and were finally a huge success but shortly after that film certificates were made because of the videos,Horror was getting more ambitious and pushed there ratings up such to an extent some horror films were banned, but anything that is banned is very intriguing. This featured films such as the evil dead a cult film trilogy that is still continued today and has even been made into a musical.

The Iconic Horror of the 1990s featured films such as scream and candy man and the blare witch project finally horror was understanding itself and was self referencing expanding it entirely to new genres and ideas, this shortly lead to a influx of "torture porn horror films gorn-nogrophy" these featured added nudity and were very popular in the 2000s.
